Daniel van Vianen - Scouting Report

Van Vianen is a key player in the current FC Dordrecht team, which is set to play in the playoffs and will try to secure promotion to the Eredivisie. Coach Melvin Boel has the team on track and, despite the winter transfer of top player Shein, the team has left an excellent impression with fresh and attacking football.

Earlier, I had saved the AnalystsBar scouting template to evaluate a player - a resource I’d never used before. It seemed like an excellent opportunity to try out this form during the FC Dordrecht – MVV Maastricht match, with Van Vianen as the player I wanted to evaluate.

I found the form easy to handle, clear, and and offering an opportunity to provide a complete picture of a player and his outcomes. It provides a good picture of the player you are evaluating, and afterward, you can type out a nice report or save the form in your database. It is certainly user-friendly, and for a first time, it went quite smoothly.

The Report

What stood out to me during the match:

Technical – I was not able to observe Van Vianen’s outcomes under pressure because there was truly little pressure from MVV on Van Vianen. MVV played a poor match overall, which meant that several of his previous key performance indicators were much less prominent than usual. His two-footedness was clear, and even shorter passes were played accurately with his left foot without any problem.

The assignment in this match was quite simple for Van Vianen: control the area in front of the defense to strengthen their defensive structure and contribute to the build-up where possible. On paper, FC Dordrecht played with two controllers, but Parlanti was the player who was much more often involved in the attack. I suspect that if Dordrecht has control, there are two attacking midfielders: Schuurman and Parlanti. If the opponent is stronger, Parlanti might play more often alongside Van Vianen and be the controller playing from the right.

In the Physical section, I couldn't evaluate him on speed and acceleration simply because the situations hardly called for it, but it might also have to do with Van Vianen's good positioning, ensuring he was in an appropriate area to receive the ball and contribute to his team’s dominance.

The tactical output for Van Vianen is above average; his discipline and positioning are good. The actual marking of an opponent should be further examined because everything was resolved in zones. During free kicks and corners, he is the man for the loose ball, the controller.

From the Social/Psychological perspective, his attitude is excellent, and he didn't dwell on a bad ball or phase. He made logical and good choices with the ball. I couldn't evaluate his communication, but I didn't see much non-verbal communication.

Overall, his performance was strong in the context of the game and its unique challenges. Don't forget that he has only been a regular player since this season and is now considered indispensable in the starting lineup. There are a few points I would like to see again, as this game did not allow me to see his full skillset and demonstrated the need to have talented players watched repeatedly for the full perspective.

The Data

To get an even better picture of Van Vianen, I looked at his statistics in Wyscout thanks to WT Analysis. As with all data, it would be nice if points come up here that correspond with what I have seen, but the opposite can also be true. Don't forget that the report is based on a live match, and the statistics are measured over a much longer period!

Daniel van Vianen - percentile Rankings
Daniel van Vianen - percentile Rankings

It is noticeable that Van Vianen has received only two yellow cards this season, which is a small number for a player who plays as a controller in midfield. His 3 goals (compared to 0.74 xG) and 3 assists (compared to 2.15 xA) are quite high.

Although he doesn't dribble extremely often, his attempts are often successful at  67% but worth noting that the unsuccessful attempts are likely to cause significant threat to their defensive output.

The number of recoveries and counter pressing recoveries are remarkably high, with the numbers placing him in the top 10 in the KKD compared to players in almost the same position. Defensively, he is therefore an important link in the current Dordrecht.

His two-footedness is reflected in the number of shots: 13 with his right foot and 8 with his left foot, a sign of confidence in both feet. Passing is a part of the game where Van Vianen can still improve significantly. This is also clearly visible in the chart, although it is remarkable that he still scores well on the number of shot assists, assists, and xA, so it is not that he is poor with the ball.

The number of losses per 90 is above average, which is certainly a point of attention, also because they are losses in his own third. Van Vianen often gets into defensive duels, and his success rate is good at 67%. In the air, he appears to be quite vulnerable, especially in his own third. Van Vianen is not a strong header and is vulnerable defensively.

It is not surprising that Van Vianen's performances fluctuate; this is his first year at this level, last season he hardly played. If Van Vianen develops, then a next step is certainly not excluded, a player with room for development but also already particularly good qualities.
